Knowing and Listening by Carolyn McDonald

"Knowing and Listening" is a 24" x 18" oil on gallery wrap canvas. I enjoy how the sky color changes in value and intensity and the eyes look up. Here, in Alabama, the ultramarine blue sky is more intense than in Tennessee. I'm not sure why, but it is. The darker blue appears to make the clouds even more beautiful.  To see more paintings, go to

"Favorite View" by Carolyn McDonald

My cat, Camille Claudel, loves to lay in front of the window whenever she gets a chance.  One of the most striking things about her, besides her beautiful calico colors, is her long, white, and full whiskers.  She has the longest whiskers I have ever seen on a cat.

"Trixie as Jane Russell" by Carolyn McDonald

Trixie is my Muse.  She belongs to my good friend and artist, Phyllis, and Phyllis has allowed me to paint any photo of her or her other cat.  Trixie's pose on the oriental rug really grabbed me along with the spark of highlights on her beautiful fur.  My biggest challenge was to keep the oriental rug from attracting too much attention.  My painting pallet included Madder Deep, Transparent Red Oxide, Yellow Ochre, Indian Yellow, Ice Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Prussion Blue,Cassel Earth (by Lucas) and Titanium White.

"Brown Sugar" by Carolyn McDonald

"Brown is brown."  At least that is what my husbands says.  However, when one trains their eye to see warm and cool temperatures too, the subtle brown shades and tints begin to emerge.  Just as I ask, what color is white, I asked what color is that brown or black, depending on the overall color of the animal.  My palette for this painting was Madder Deep, Transparent Red Oxide, Indian Yellow, Adobe, Ultramarine Blue, Ice Blue, Cassel Earth, and Titanium White.

"Lilly Moss" by Carolyn McDonald

"Lilly Moss" by Carolyn McDonald
"Lilly Moss" belonged to my friend, Rhonda.  She was 15 years old and blind.  Lilly passed away a few weeks ago and I wanted to paint her portrait.  While the photo showed the cataracts on her eyes, Rhonda said she would like to remember her brown eyes.  So....I painted a touch of brown in her ailing eyes.  To see more paintings, go to my website.

"Doogie" by Carolyn McDonald

"Doogie" by Carolyn McDonald
12" x 12" oil on board
A number of years ago our family owned a male Pom.  When I had to go to Florida State to do my years residency for my Ph.D.  we could not take Doogie with us.  We found a great home for him,  our vet.   She wanted to breed Doogie and the first female Pom Doogie saw, Megan, he never paid us anymore attention.  Doogie is long gone and I'm afraid we didn't have very good photos of him.  A friend posted this Pom, Zacky, and she let me paint him.  Before the painting was over, I fell in love with the image.  It looked just like Doogie.  So, I changed the name. If the owner wants the painting, I'll change the name back.  But for now, it's my baby, Doogie.

"The Artist," by Carolyn McDonald
Lots of pet owners like to dress their dogs and cats up.  I decided to have a little fun with one of Gus's photos.  As the panting progressed he looked like he was wearing an artist's hat.  Hence the name.  To see more paintings, go to my website.

Carolyn McDonald: "Crystal"

Carolyn McDonald, "Crystal" is 10" x 8" oil on board.
Crystal belonged to a close friend.  She died last year and they requested that I paint her.  The color of her hair and its texture was a lot of fun to paint.

"Luna in the Morning"
10" x 8" oil on hard board
A great photo makes all the difference in the world!  My good friend and artist, Phyllis Gibson, has given me permission to paint any photos of her cats.  When she posted this one, I knew right away, that I could paint a beautiful painting from the great light, medium, and dark values.  Luna's pose is also theatrical.  A judge from a recent exhibition said that my portraits have the elusive feel of a 1940's starlit photo shoot.  I want to capture that same sense of mystery, strength, and style with my animal portraits.  I have succeeded with Luna.  Phyllis, maybe she will become famous!
