This floral still life is the one hour demo I painted for my workshop yesterday. In this painting, I wanted to show how grays can really be lively and pop your colors, too. Wow, did I ever have a bunch of hard working artists...they were at the easel painting a half hour early and through most of the lunch hour! We had a lot of fun and hopefully learned a few things, too... Remember..squint, put those darks in and work on the entire canvas!!

This is the first demo I painted in the workshop this week. I still see a couple of little things to change. Also I am thinking this still life setup might be interesting with a white cloth behind it... a little more dramatic, although I am pretty happy with the blues.

The art center in Fairhope has wonderful studios and I had a really fabulous bunch of artists to work with.

I will post photos of the class tomorrow.

There may still be an opening in the Foley workshop next week so give them a call, as it will be my last one for a while.

My Barbie Doll by Nancy Rhodes Harper

My painting is a painting of the Barbie Doll that I once had, not from life but as I remember her. I gave Barbie away to another little girl to enjoy many years ago. I remember my summers with Nancy Ward. We were Barbie fiends. We took them everywhere. At the swimming pool they would lay out on washcloths for towels, they rode around in comfort right in our bicycle baskets. We used to design and make all of their clothes. Nancy and I would go to the local mercantile to buy fabric. They sold us a strip of fabric about 6 inches deep and 36 inches wide for 5 cents! My dad took me to the store before school started one day to buy Barbie so I would be able to take her to school with me. Not quiet finished with this one....near tho. Fisherman's Wharf is full of great boat scenes to paint. You would think I would pick something simpler to warm up after not painting for 8 days... the longest time in three years!

Since I got back there has been one ordeal after another to deal with... besides the catch-up things. Taking a vacation seems to be more work than it's worth. Next time I may just check in to a beach side condo here in Gulf Shores.

This gentleman was enjoying an outdoor cafe at Fisherman's Wharf in Monterrey. Carmel and Monterrey are full of beautiful scenery and friendly people. Oh, and lets don't forget the fabulous art and food! The paintings at the American Impressionist Society Show were stunning.

Also my oil and acrylic portrait and figure painting workshop starts next week and I still have a couple openings. Hard to believe it is almost November!

Cahaba Beauties

Here's another of the large cahaba lily paintings I did. These flowers are just amazing to see in person, but you have to catch them between Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day, and only in a few places in the world, Alabama being one of them. We're lucky to live close enough - about an hour away - and make a point to see them.

I went in search of something to paint the other day and passed by an open gate down town. What I spied inside was amazing! It looked like a movie set. Old buildings, a train car, a cafe,plants, fountains etc. Of course I had to stop and paint it! The owner, Doug Smith happened by to look at what I was painting and told me it is a place they rent out for events, such as parties, receptions, corporate events. It is called The Lumber Yard just off Cleveland St in Huntsville, Al. I am going back again to paint more. I painted a smaller, similar version of these onions a few months ago, and then decided to paint them larger. These are on a 12"x30" board. They work horizontally, but I think they're kinda fun as a long vertical. I wish I could think of some other long veggies that would be fun to paint. Thought of carrots, but I'm not so sure I want to paint them!

If anyone can make it to the Kentuck Festival of the Arts in Northport, AL this weekend I'll be in booth J12. It's the 40th anniversary of this show with lots of great artists. And the weather should be beautiful! I've painted several large (20"x30") cahaba lilies for the show, this being one of them. I hope to see some of you there!

I like the fresh color in this little still life with bananas. I kept the painting simple using broad strokes of clean color. And yes I am going bananas, looking for new things to paint, trying to decide what to take to Carmel for the American Impressionist Show etc etc. I think I am going to take pastels to use on the paint-out as I don't want to deal with transporting wet oils and getting them through airport security.

What Are You Looking At?

Saturday was a beautiful day for the 48th Annual Bluff Park Art Show. Thank you to everyone who stopped by my booth. I was fortunate enough to receive the Renasant Bank Cash Award for one of my cows ("Watchful") that I posted earlier, thanks to judge EvanWilson.

These two cows seemed to be as curious about me as I was about them, thus the title. It's painted on an 11"x17" board.

I bought this wonderful little iron bird and flower at 4-Seasons Antiques, Art, and Botanicals this past summer. I've also become a connoisseur of thrift stores; speckled blue vase and block. Put them together and you have "Wishful Thinking."
